19-Cultural Development and Heritage

Welcome to a new way to experience history! We make museums simpler, more fascinating and more accessible for everyone. No hassle with going to the museum – with virtual tours and interactive elements you can experience history at home. And that is good news for people who cannot travel so easily. Our approach integrates innovative technologies and sustainable practices to bring history to life wherever you are.

Discover the Future of Museums in Ghent: Virtual Adventures and Sustainable Technology

With virtual tours, interactive elements and relive the experience of historical events, you no longer have to leave your home to visit a museum. This makes it more inclusive for people who have difficulties getting around physically. While this certainly offers benefits, we recognize that it also brings challenges, such as the potential loss of the authentic museum experience.

We also want to renovate buildings, but in a smart way! For example, imagine sensors that adjust lighting, energy consumption, heating and cooling based on the needs of visitors. In that way, we focus extra on the environment and contribute to a positive impact on the climate.

But that's not all. We have big plans for the city of Ghent itself. Our vision includes the development of two separate “cities” within the city. One city with all the historical monuments and another city with cool technologies. This allows visitors to choose where they want to go and makes navigation through the different buildings easier. Preserving the historic character is central, while at the same time embracing how the city is evolving with modern technologies.

Practical Approach and Collaboration

For this vision of the future, we work together with another domain of the city, namely Tourism and Hospitality.

Their vision is similar to ours: preserve historical heritage as much as possible, with an eye to evolving technology. This makes cultural heritage attractive and accessible to everyone.

Multiple collaborations are possible. Energy and Sustainability will also be an important player in our vision of the future. Urban Architecture and Spatial Planning can also contribute to the precise construction plans. Finally, the Sustainable Events and Festivals domain is interesting when we talk about (for example) the Ghent Festivities as cultural heritage.

What does that mean to you

When thinking about people, we don't forget anyone. The young people of the future in particular are central to this initiative. At the same time, there are benefits for the elderly, allowing them to vividly relive their memories without having to physically go to museums. People with disabilities also benefit from the accessibility of virtual experiences, making the journey to museums or attractions less stressful.

In essence, we unite technological progress with inclusivity and respect for the past. Our vision is to make history accessible and engaging for everyone, creating a rich and vibrant experience that can be shared by all walks of life. Welcome to the future of museum experience in Ghent!

It is important to also note that cultural heritage is about much more than just museums and important monuments. It also includes music, dance, oral history… Just think of our beloved Ghent Festivities!
